Summary
This video explains how PhoneBurner selects which phone number to display as the Caller ID when using a Number Pool. There are two main methods for determining which number is shown:
-
Random Selection:
- PhoneBurner randomly picks one of the numbers from your pool for each outbound call.
- This is the most common and default setting for PhoneBurner users.
-
Local Presence:
- PhoneBurner selects a phone number from your pool that matches the area code closest to your contact’s location.
- This feature requires manual activation by submitting a request form in the Local Presence section under Numbers in Settings.
Caller ID Consistency Feature:
- PhoneBurner tracks the last Caller ID displayed to each contact.
- On future calls, if that same number is available in the current Number Pool, PhoneBurner will display it again to maintain consistency and build trust.
- If that number is unavailable, the system will choose another number based on the pool’s settings (Random or Local Presence).
By strategically selecting the Caller ID, PhoneBurner helps improve answer rates and maintain consistent communication with contacts.

Cleaned-Up Transcript
Whenever you make an outbound call using PhoneBurner, the system must display a Caller ID. This can be:
- A phone number you brought into PhoneBurner.
- A phone number you purchased directly through PhoneBurner.
If you’ve purchased numbers through PhoneBurner, you can group those numbers into Number Pools. These pools allow you to use a set of Caller IDs for a specific dial session.
How PhoneBurner Selects a Caller ID
There are two primary methods PhoneBurner uses to decide which phone number to display:
-
Random Selection
- The system randomly chooses a number from the pool for each outbound call.
- As you make calls and disposition them, PhoneBurner will automatically pick another random number from the pool.
- This is the default setting for most PhoneBurner users.
-
Local Presence
- If Local Presence is activated on your account, PhoneBurner will select a number from your pool that matches the area code closest to your contact.
- For example, if you’re calling a contact in Florida, the system will display a Florida phone number. If you’re calling Texas, a Texas number will be displayed.
Activating Local Presence
Local Presence is not enabled by default and requires an additional request. To activate it:
- Click your initials in the upper-right corner of your PhoneBurner account.
- Select Numbers under Settings.
- On the left side, click Local Presence.
- Click the Request button and complete the provided form.
Once activated, you can select which Number Pools will use Local Presence and which will not.
Caller ID Consistency
To build trust with your contacts, PhoneBurner tracks the last Caller ID that was displayed to each contact.
- On future calls, if that number is available in the selected Number Pool, PhoneBurner will automatically use it again.
- If the original number is unavailable, the system will default to selecting a new number based on the pool’s settings (Random or Local Presence).
This process helps maintain consistency, improving recognition and increasing the likelihood of your contacts answering the call.
That’s a quick overview of how PhoneBurner selects a Caller ID from a Number Pool. Thanks for taking the time to watch this video, and happy dialing!
